5 Tips for Buying a Shredder

In January, I was interviewed on how to deal with the dreaded “paper clutter” and the topic of purchasing a shredder came up.  If you have some time, log onto CBC Radio One podcasts…and listen to my interview with Rita Celli on the only province wide call in show.  You can listen here. ontariotodayAs a follow up to that interview, I received a few calls from my fellow listeners asking me to recommend a good paper shredder.  In the near future, I hope to be able to get a few shredders for product reviews and then be able to give them away to my readers…so stay tuned!

As a quick re-cap to buying a shredder:

  1. Consider a medium size shredder instead of a small desktop or shredder that sits over a waste paper basket. Size does matter. If your shredder is too small it will burn out the engine very quickly.
  2. Make sure to get a CROSS CUT shredder that makes confetti.  The long strips of paper is not enough.  There have been cases where people have put together these pieces of paper and submitted an application to a bank.  The bank accepted the application. Urban myth or not?  Who knows but do you really want to find out?
  3. Try to get the bells and whistles: buy a shredder that has the capacity to shred CDs and credit cards.  Having a separate drop-in container also helps so you don’t mix plastic with paper.
  4. Maintenance is important.  Use the little bottle of oil that they give you to keep the blades sharp and running smoothly.  Don’t feed to many pages at a time – you will burn out your engine.
  5. USE YOUR SHREDDER…it is not a decoration in your office. Think of those commercials where the running shoes or the bike talk to the person and say: so do you think you want to go out?  Shredding should be a priority for anyone who wants to keep their identity to themselves.
Happy Shredding!
