Ontario Pioneer Camp–Family Fun in Port Sydney, ON #PioneerCamp

Sharing is caring!

I love camping… I mean I really love camping.  I went camping as a kid with my parents right across this great white north.  There is nothing like being outdoors, having a bonfire, going fishing, maybe some canoeing.  Its all good.

Fast forward to today and well I still like camping, I just like the idea of roughing it with a roof over my head and the meals made for me.  I like someone to have the canoe ready and have the bonfire already set up for us.  I love being in a cabin because it give you some of the comforts of home but a lot of the ‘rustic’ charm (challenging fun) of being in the outdoors. There is nothing wrong with wanting to go to camp when you are in your 40s…is there?

So, you can imagine my delight when I was asked to bring my family for a fun filled weekend to Ontario Pioneer Camp.  Located in Port Sydney, Ontario. It made Babble’s 30 Best Family Camps in North America. That is a pretty big deal considering there are thousands of camps to choose from.

Ontario Pioneer Camp was opened in 1929 so it has years and years of memories.  It is a Faith based camp for young children, teens and families with sister camps in BC, Manitoba and Alberta.  It has all the fun activities of every other summer camp with the added bonus of community building through worship.

In order to make my family feel welcome, OPC kindly sent a care package that my kids could hardly wait to open it… and open it they did while I was away.  But they were smart enough to take some great photos so you can see our Camp treasures.

We are headed off to Ontario Pioneer Camp next week and we have many plans.  There are all sorts of family and individual activities for the kids.  I am bringing my 12, 14 & 16 year old kids.  So there is a variety of ages and a variety of tastes but I think there is something for everyone.  Having brought up the kids as practicing Catholics, I am looking forward to the worship part of the weekend also.  I have sent kids to Bible Day Camp years ago and the loved it then.  It will just add a great element for us.

The best time of the day for me will be the bonfire with skits, singing and…

S’MORES

My son wanted to start making them immediately… I pointed out we don’t have a bonfire, no worries, “we can do it on the BBQ”

The rest of the care package was a CD (Adventure Camp: Worship), a couple of lip balms (one of which has already gone missing…scoffed by a teenager I’m sure), sunglasses, bug spray, sunscreen (60 SPF – no less), $30 in gift cards to Webers in Orillia and a $25 Gas card for the trip. Whoo hoo… how great is that???
