Kung Hei Fat Choi… those are the words you need to learn if you are going to wish someone a happy new year.  In the Asian culture, Chinese New Year is as important as our Gregorian Calendar New Year.  This year the Lunar New Year will be celebrated on January 31, 2014.  As we celebrate our Christian holidays, we can open our horizons to other traditions that let us have some fun.

When I moved to Vancouver in 1990, I had no idea how large the Asian community was in the Lower Mainland.  I had lived in multi-cultural Montreal and I was moving from the melting pot that is Toronto which has a prominent Asian influence.

No matter how large, it does not compare to Vancouver as far as I can see.  There are people from varying nationalities.  My husbands small group of friends were from Japanese, Chinese, Pilipino and Hong Kong Chinese families.  All born in Canada, all of his friends continue to follow many of their families’ traditions.  They continue to pass on their traditions to their children.

I know, celebrating the Lunar New Year was one of those traditions.  This was no small celebration and it was always celebrated in the company of family and friends.  I found out that there are large family friendly meals to be shared and gifts to be exchanged.  Most are in the form of cash but I am going to assume that other holiday gift ideas would be an individual gift card or many different gift cards for the recipients.

In keeping with this tradition, Best Buy supports events which they believe are of importance to employees, customers, and communities.  The upcoming Lunar New Year is one of those important celebrations.

For Asians all around the world, including Asian-Americans and Asian-Canadians, Lunar New Year not only celebrates the beginning of the year but also the ending of winter and the anticipated arrival of spring.  It is one of the most important holidays celebrated in countries such as China, Tibet, Korea, and Vietnam.

This upcoming year, Lunar New Year, which is based on the phases of the moon, falls on January 31st 2014 of our Gregorian calendar.  Best Buy is helping celebrate the event with an Asian-inspired E-Gift Cards available for purchase or gifting from BestBuy.com.

There is also a promotion going on during this time that you can share with your readers in this blog post: “Don’t miss your chance. Give it to win it. Daily gift card prizes up to $10,000.  Buy any Best Buy gift card, $25 & up, then enter for your chance to win.” Ends 12/24/2013:

I think I’ll be looking at one of these special Best Buy Gift Cards in the near future for my family.  I love celebration whether they have been part of my family since I was a kid or they are new to me.  I can hardly wait.
