If you are visiting the Quebec Capital region you have plenty of options for day trips from Quebec City.  In less than an hour’s drive, you can be in the mountains hiking le massif de Charlevoix, visit a national shrine at St. Ann de Beaupre, partake in a food and wine tour on Île d’Orléans or ride a cable car up to the top of Montmorency Falls. There are so many options if you take the scenic highway on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. One of the best options is a stop at Montmorency Falls provincial park.

Montmorency Falls Park is one of those perfect day trips from Quebec City located on Route 138 just north of this provincial capital.  Easily accessible by this scenic highway, you can visit the park in about an hour.  If you want to stay longer, I would suggest taking a picnic and enjoying the sound of the falls.

Looking towards the St. Lawrence River and Ile d’Orleans

You can access the falls in one of two ways: (1) either drive to the top of the falls and walk to the suspended bridge from there; or (2) access the cable car off of the highway. You will see the St. Lawrence River and Ile d’Orlean as you ascend on the cable car up. Once you disembark, walk to the suspension bridge over the falls. The video below was taken from the suspension bridge. Either way, you will be paying for day parking.

At 83 meters high (30 meters higher than Niagara Falls but obviously not as large) visiting the falls has one very unique vantage point: you can stand on a suspension bridge right over the falls.  That is something you cannot do in Niagara Falls.

If you want to take the time you can discover the falls on foot, by cable car or from the comfort of the restaurant, there is a means of seeing this beautiful waterfall for everyone.  This would definitely be a great inter-generational visit suited for all activity levels.

At the top of the falls you will find the Manoir and gatehouse.  If you are hungry, you can try the Manoir restaurant-terrace, Le 1759 street food truck, mobile restaurant in the park, dairy counter, snack bar on the bridge and Sunday brunch (when they reopen).

For adventure seekers, you can now take a zip-line across the falls.  or for the more active, the via ferrata, a hiking trail on a cliff, promises some adrenaline and breathtaking views.

You can see that there is a way down some stairs on the opposite hill toward the bottom of the falls.  It was stunning but on the day we went, you had to climb down and then right back up the stairs.
