I don’t know about any of you but I get a bit nutty when my in-laws come to visit.  My husband says, I get very nutty but that is because I am making up for the fact that he doesn’t worry about a thing.

The problem is there are plenty of things to worry about: (1) is the guest bedroom clean and tidy – check; (2) have I got the right coffee – caffeinated not decaffeinated- check; (2) have I cleaned the fridge – partially – 1/2 check; (3) did I get real maple syrup – check; (4) have I dusted all the floor boards, tables, cobwebs – NOOOOOOOOO.  I still have so much to do!

O.K. stop obsessing and take a deep breath…inhale…exhale…inhale…exhale….did I re-organize my storage room in the basement?  Have I dusted the dining room hutch, on top, have I dusted my kids shelves…STOP THE MADNESS……FOCUS…inhale…exhale…inhale…exhale…

Let me make something perfectly CLEAR: my mother-in-law DOES NOT  put on a pair of white gloves and checks for dust, she does not look into the back of my fridge on purpose, nor does she check the thread count on my guest bed sheets.  She never has and she never will.  That does not mean that I don’t think that she will… some day…I’m certain of it….I warned you…I am a bit nutty.

Seriously, I need a pair of cuffs
like these

My in-laws are wonderful people and my kids love to be with them but as a daughter-in-law, I always feel that I have to make sure to keep up.  Granted my mother-in-law has to be one of the most organzized women I know…only my friend Pam is better organized.  That being said, I feel a deep sense of  duty that she walks into my home and believes that I take care of her son and her son’s children like any true SUPERHERO/SUPERMOM/SUPERWOMAN would.

The thing is…I am whispering now so no one will hear...I hate to do housework!  I admit it.  I would much rather go to someone’s home and tear it apart and put it back together all nicely organized, then do the same with my home. {My Business Mantra: “I am a professional not a perfectionist”}

Regardless, I know that when my in-laws come, I feel that everything has to be perfect.  That is why today I meticulously re-arranged my pantry and cleaned the inside of my kitchen cabinets and yesterday, I bought real maple syrup and Wednesday, I will buy fresh navel oranges – my father-in-law’s loves them.  By Thursday, I will eventually go down to my basement and re-organize my scrapbook area, tidy up the storage space and clear out the guest closet (where my husband loves to store the shirts that he irons every Tuesday night…argh…).

So, this week’s Margarita’s Manic Monday Minutes – 4M – will be dedicated to taking the time to:

  1. cleaning out my fridge
  2. check every bathroom vanity to make sure it is orderly
  3. re-arrange items on the shelves in the garage
  4. clean every towel, sheet and linen that is used in this house
and then patiently wait until my mother-in-law arrives and notices…NOTHING….because she doesn’t really care and she will be too busy having fun with her grandchildren. Nutty, I know…

  1. I hear what you are saying…but realy WHO does like house work….oh judgement just slipped in there. It is like anything…people are probably shocked that we like to help people organize and streamlife. To each his/her own. For me I like to delegate where necessary and housecleaning is one of those activities that I have to do not want to do.
    So keep on keepin on and ejyoy the inlaws.
