I’ve decided to start a new series of posts entitled “I’m Just Saying…” I wanted to address some questions that clients and readers have asked me. If you want a question answered on anything organizing email me at info@downshifting.ca.
I heard that it is not good to have an office in your bedroom. What do you think?

Oh, dear…don’t get me started on this one! The only exception to having a work space directly in the same area that you sleep is either a dorm room or a studio apartment. Even with the studio apartment, you can place the work space in the living room or eating area.
Avoid at all costs: working in your bed. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary and a place where you ‘turn off’ and stop thinking about the world’s problems in general and your co-workers or boss in particular.
As small business owners, we have the problem of constantly being in work mode. Even if I have a dedicated office, I find myself using my computer at the kitchen table, in the family room or living room. There are the odd times that I have it with me by my bed (yes, I am human, people). This is invariably a bad idea because I don’t support my back correctly, it is not good for my laptop to heat up because I have it on a pillow and I end up going to sleep with ‘work’ on the brain – very unhealthy!
Making a dedicated work space will help you maintain your space cleared of clutter. I always say that organizing is about two things: (1) making changes to bad habits and (2) setting limits. You need to set limits on where the office stops and where your sleeping area starts…I’m just saying.

Here’s another interesting tidbit:
“According to feng shui bedroom tips, you should never keep your working desk or computer in your bedroom. Logic behind this feng shui tip tells us that sleeping is passive and yin. Office working on the other hand is yang or active. Home office simply brings too much active energy into what should be passive room. This can disturb your good night sleep.”

Oh I couldn’t agree more w/ this post Margarita! It’s already hard enough to turn work off mentally at times! Work in the bedroom = relationship issues!!
