Not the high cost of gas.

Not the falling dollar.

Not failing banks.

IT WILL BE ALL ABOUT W.A.T.E.R.

Because water is the key to life.

He said that to me 15 years ago. I remember thinking that the issue may be genetically modified foods, climate change induced ‘el Niño’  or food shortages.  These are all issues that are now in the forefront of our collective consciousness.  We hear about it everyday. We read about it or we see documentaries about any one of these topics.  What we believe to be dramatic changes to our planet ‘in the future’ is a stark reality for 663 million people in the world who don’t have access to clean water and sanitation.

This conversation with my father has been one that has stayed with me.  Thinking about water is so very important to all of us.  It’s a time to reflect and consider what we may be able to do to help others have access.  World Vision Canada  has launched a a 5 year project to invest $400 million to help tackle the global water crisis because they believe every child has the right to clean water.  What does that look like?

• Bring clean well water to the heart of communities
• Solar & Hand Pumps that do not require electricity
• Community members are trained to be water Technicians
• Train repair mechanics because proper maintenance  keeps clean water flowing
• Water Pipelines
• Well Digging to diminish having to bring clean water across long distances

As North Americans, we constantly take for granted what it means to have water accessible to us.  We know that we can walk to our nearest tap to pour a cold, clean glass of water.  We can walk to a fountain or even buy a bottle of water.  It would never occur to us that we would miss school or work because we had to walk an average of six kilometers just to get the water that we needed for the day.  It would be a challenge for us to even imagine a world without a running toilet, a dishwasher or a shower but that is what millions of families have to deal with on a daily basis.

Clean water changes lives. Having water easily accessible helps families become stronger when fields can be irrigated for crops and live stock.  This lets them produce healthy food.  Children that are hydrated property will help them pay attention in school and increase the possibility of them attending school because they are not walking to find water.  We can all make a difference in the lives of families around the world.

If you have ever considered what it would be like to live in a world that has limited water supply and clean sanitation you may want to try this small experiment with your family.  I’m asking you to join me (and other Canadian families) and take the World Vision Water Challenge to help your family understand what it would mean to walk in another person’s shoes. Consider trying just one of these challenges:

1. Use only one tap in your home all day long
2. Try to get by with using only one small pitcher of water all day for everything – cooking, washing, drinking…cleaning
3. Use only the tap out in the yard for water
