Organizing a trip? I bet the first thing you do is google a location, destination or hotel. Now you have 20 tabs open and you really have no idea how to keep all this information together. One of my favourites tools for planning a trip is using Pinterest. There are thousands of blogs that write about absolutely every place in the world. You can go to Pinterest and search by city, regional area, country or activity. You can search destination and see pictures of where you would like to go.
If you are not familiar with Pinterest, it is a platform which lets you put together Pins (images from a blog post, Instagram image, YouTube video or website) on to a Pinterest board. The board function as a file folder to keep all the ‘like-minded’ ideas in one spot. The concept was developed as a sort of bulletin board to help people organize information in one location. Pinterest has become one of the strongest search engines and ‘keeper’ of information in the world.

Beginning to plan may start with how to determine the right destination for the time of year that you are travelling. A ‘travel tips’ board can range from what to pack for a specific region to how to pack your suitcase to what suitcase to buy. On my last trip to the US Gulf Shores, I created a video to help my audience understand why I decided to use packing cubes for this trip. As we were changing hotels every two nights, it was helpful to not unpack every night.

This is a good place to put suggestions on which airport to fly into, how to get to the city via public transport or what areas to avoid at night. There are many tricks you can learn when you search for ‘travel tips’ or ‘travel hacks’. How to get into a museum for free, how to see the city via public transport, how to buy at a local farmers market. All great resouces for using Pinterest to plan a trip.
Country
One of the obvious ways to plan a trip using Pinterest is to have a board dedicated to the country or countries you are visiting. Last year’s trip to Portugal and Spain had me put together a board which had both countries together. You can dump all the information that you want into one ‘folder’ and then when you have some downtime, you can look through it all.
Each board can be further divided into sections. So, for example, my CANADA board is further sectioned by provinces. I place pins which cover numerous regions into the general Canada board. This is, however, as far as you can go. You cannot have a board = Canada, a section = Ontario and then a sub-section to that with cities in Ontario. It is only one layer deep.
One Region
Recently on a girl’s getaway to the Gulf Coast, I decided to put together a Pinterest board dedicated to the US Gulf Coast. I also divided up into sections for New Orleans, Louisiana North Shore, Coastal Mississippi, Mobile and The Gulf Shores & Orange beach. I placed the blog posts which were written by my travel companions in there and I will eventually add pins from other travel bloggers.
Attractions or Activities
If you are going to Disney you may want to go to different parks. There may be a specific attraction you want to see. Without a doubt, using Pinterest to plan a trip will be easier if you research what you want to do. I am a big fan of museums so I can create a section within a board that is just about museums.

You can consider creating sections for day trips from the main city, three-day itinerary, information on how to get there and what to pack.
Food Focused
I am a foodie. I focus on what is a local delicacy or not-to-be-missed dish. I love keeping a list of the best places to eat – breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner. You may also want to keep track of the best places to have coffee or even how to order a coffee (it can be very complicated in Europe).
One of my favourite formats for blog posts is creating the Ultimate Guide to Good Eats in… I have one for The Gulf Shores & Orange Beach and I just published one on Good Eats and Signature Drinks in New Orleans.

Conclusion
I am looking forward to my upcoming trip to Colombia and have already started pinning where I want to go and what I want to see. Being organized always helps and using Pinterest to plan a trip is the best way I know how.
