As part of a blogging challenge, I was asked us to blog about how we have taken something old and made it new.  I wanted to share with my readers about a project.  I chose a spray paint makeover because, though I have spray painted other things (like the lamp below) I have not done big pieces.  I have also tried some new projects (check out my office makeover here).

I have been trying hard to finish a small recycle project.  Actually, its a big project for me but maybe a small project for others.  I was driving home one day and by the road with a large “FREE” sign on it was an old cabinet.  I am not one for antiques but this piece caught my eye.

It was a small cabinet with two doors and was the perfect size to fit in my living room.  For years I have had to put up with my husband’s stereo equipment siting on the floor.  I have always wanted a cabinet but we keep talking about getting something new, something small, something modern.  Well, that hasn’t happened yet so instead, I decided that I would re-vamp this ‘free’ treasure and make it my own.

I did not take a before picture so you’ll have to imagine how it was pretty beat up.  There is no backing to the cabinet and we had to buy a piece of wood to fit over a large cut out in the middle.  No worries, it can all be done.

You can imagine how I was taken with the delicate details of this cabinet.  I wanted something that was pretty simple but had a few embellishments.  I have chosen to change the handles but I think it may take a while to find the knobs that I want. I am thinking something made of crystal that dangles.  Can you picture this?

If you can see, there is a few fine details on the legs and the base.  Painting this with spray paint is no small task.  I thought it would just take a few coats but in truth it took three and a fourth would not be a bad idea.  In the picture below, the grey paint is a high gloss finish but not high gloss enough for me.  I need to convince my husband to apply a few coats of polyurethane to create that really high gloss look that I want.

So after a few months in storage, I hope to finish this project next weekend.  Keep tune for a Wordless Wednesday post for the finished product! I have converted this ‘antique’ into a useful cabinet.  I have turned something old and revamped it to be something new.

  1. Your cabinet is looking great! Painting a big piece of furniture is no small task, so I can appreciate all the hard work that’s went into it so far. I can picture dangling crystal knobs looking beautiful on this.

  2. Oh I love the cabinet!! It looks amazing. I love taking things and making them new. I posted my cheerios post about making yarn out of some of our old clothes. Ones we love but just aren’t in wearable condition any more. I think knit it into a floor mat 🙂

Thanks for linking up with comment love! You can link up again 🙂

  3. Beautiful cabinet! Would have loved to have seen the before photos. Great job though. Love the colour you chose for spray paint.

  4. Oh wow, what a gorgeous cabinet! Can’t wait to see the final results on it! The crystal idea for the knobs is fab; it usually takes me about two weeks to finally determine what knobs I like when changing things up a bit, lol.

  5. That is a beautiful cabinet Margarita. I can understand why you snagged it. Looks great so far too. Looks like I missed out on breakfast, so we’ll have to wait until it hits the stores. Good luck on the finishing touches for your project!
