I love to eat out.
Any opportunity, I don’t have to come up with a creative meal for five is a great day for me. That being said, I like creating dishes just not the tedium of cooking. So when I had an unexpected date night with my husband in Toronto that included dinner and a movie… well, that was a good day.

We took our oldest to see Twenty-One Pilots at The Opera House in Leslieville in east Toronto. An area I am not as familiar but is relatively close to the downtown core. You will go through Cabbage Town, Regent Park, Leslieville and then hit The Beaches. Hubby found the movie theatre and when we needed to find a place to eat, I did what every other person with a smartphone does, I Googled “good restaurants in Beaches area of Toronto”. Up popped up Murphy’s Law on dine.TO.com.
We found ourselves picking Captain America: The Winter Soldier (read review next week). One of the best parts about Murphy’s Law Pub is that it is down the street from the movie theatre and across the street from Woodbine Racetrack. Located on the corner of Queen and Kingston Road, you can easily access it from the TTC (public transport).
You have a choice of a few seating areas: the front patio, the rooftop patio (both seasonal), the main floor and the quieter second floor. We choose the quieter second floor where there was only on TV and it was not in my sight line.
There are two indoor areas: the downstairs is lively and full of TV screens. There are
plenty of areas that you can sit in a group or just the two of you
. I did find that this was a bit louder so if you are looking for a sports experience this would be your best bet. I have to admit that it was pretty full for a quiet Monday evening. I can’t imagine how packed it would get if the horse races are on across the street at Woodbine. Just something to consider.
The upstairs is quieter and has a variety of seating. Pub style tables with higher chairs and regular tables with bench seating. Either way, it is has a great pub feel and you can watch the traffic go by. We had a quiet table for just the two of us with a view to the street. Very relaxing and lazy.
Like most pubs there was a great selection of beers, ales and ciders on tap. It was Monday so the specials were: 1/2 Price Appetizers With beverage purchase from 4pm to close as well as $6 Pints (Guinness, Harp, Kilkenny, Smithwicks). Hubby opted for a Guinness to begin but then had a Black and Tan. So it is a Guinness with a lighter lager to soften the taste up. I’m not sure that is how my hubby would describe it but that is what it tasted like to me!
Elk Sliders: Grilled elk topped with maple glazed onions, lettuce and a Grand Marinier, Smokey bacon aioli. Have to say these were very yummy but they need to be just a little bit bigger. I like sliders that are more then just two bites but less then a big hamburger. So I would recommend that you get one per person and not share. Chips were yummy and plentiful.
Give it a try for sure.
Grilled Duck & Fig Flatbread: Served on Whole Wheat flat bread with sliced figs (yumm), roasted duck (not nearly enough), baby arugula (love that kick of peppery greens), goat cheese and pesto aioli. Having tasted the garlic aioli, I would have gone with that combination. We both like this appetizer but the whole wheat bread made it somewhat bland. What’s wrong with regular flatbread, anyway?
It was a great shareable portion so go to order as a group.
Chicken Avocado Egg Rolls: Soy marinated chicken breast, fresh ginger, sautéed vegetables, shredded cabbage served with a spicy & sweet dip. Fore the most part they sounded good but were a bit bland. If you order them, be sure and ask for the Garlic Aioli to dip it in.
All around the service was really good but the food was alright. I would go back for the atmosphere and the beer on tap. Worth the try if you are in the area. I assume the rooftop patio would be a lot of fun.

I have to say I loved this sign on the Patio. Nice to think they care enough to ask patrons to keep it down. Not sure people would pay attention but it is nice.
