From my first visit to Philadelphia in 2017, I became a huge fan of this vibrant city. Philly has so much to offer — history buffs, foodies, sports fans, and art lovers will all find something to love here. It’s easy to overlook the City of Brotherly Love in favor of New York City (two hours north) or Washington, D.C. (90 minutes south), but I encourage you to plan even a quick trip. There’s so much packed into this city that even a few days will leave you impressed! Here’s our perfect 3-day Philadelphia itinerary from a recent mother-daughter getaway — full of sightseeing, good eats, and a few surprises.

🗓️ Day 1: Philly Cheesesteaks, Prison Tours, and SkyHigh Cocktails

After wrapping up a business trip in New York City, my daughter and I decided to spend a few days in Philadelphia before flying home. Taking a bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal made it a straightforward and cost-effective choice, dropping us conveniently close to our hotel in the Fishtown neighborhood. (Pro Tip: Don’t dismiss taking the bus—it’s economical, efficient, and stress-free!)

We hopped in an Uber to our hotel (Anna and Bel) to drop off our bags and get some local intel on lunch. A short walk later, we found ourselves at Joe’s Steaks and Soda Shop, a Fishtown classic for more than 75 years. We couldn’t visit Philly without ordering a cheesesteak! We also grabbed a juicy cheeseburger, crispy fries, a cherry coke, and a rich strawberry milkshake. It was precisely what we needed to kick off a busy day of sightseeing.

Eastern State Penitentiary is one of the most hauntingly fascinating sites in the city. Walking through the abandoned cellblocks and echoing corridors, you’ll get a glimpse of prison life from over a century ago. Once the most famous—and costly—prison in the world, it operated from 1829 to 1970 and pioneered the concept of incarceration as rehabilitation (giving rise to the term “penitentiary”).

Visitors can take a self-guided audio tour narrated by actor Steve Buscemi, which layers chilling stories of prison life with reflections on today’s criminal justice system. You’ll hear firsthand accounts from former inmates as you explore the facility, making the history feel even more immediate and moving. Eastern State is both an architectural marvel and a sobering reminder of the human stories behind the walls.

After lunch, we switched gears with a visit to the Franklin Institute, one of the top science museums in the country. It’s a hands-on, interactive playground for adults and kids alike, with iconic exhibits like the Giant Heart, the newly revamped Body Odyssey experience, and the Wondrous Space gallery. We particularly enjoyed the musculoskeletal interactive zone — it’s a clever, engaging way to understand how our bodies move.

If you’re lucky, your visit might coincide with a special exhibit. BODY WORLDS: Vital, a fascinating and sometimes unsettling look at human anatomy using real plastinated bodies. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s absolutely unforgettable. We caught this exhibit years ago when it made a stop in Toronto.

No girl’s getaway would be complete without a cocktail. I could not resist walking a few blocks to the Comcast Center Campus to watch a spectacular sunset from the 60th floor of the luxe Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia.

Home to Michelin-starred chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s signature restaurant (Jean-Georges) and cocktail lounge (JG SkyHigh). The elevator ride alone is worth it as you quickly ascend to see all of Philadelphia. A well-kept secret to those in the know—but you know now!

🗓️ Day 2: Exploring Old City, Liberty Bell, and Local Flavor

We started our morning with brunch at Bastia, located right inside our hotel, Hotel Anna & Bel. With its cozy atmosphere and upscale, locally-sourced menu, Bastia felt like a hidden gem. I highly recommend making a reservation when you book your hotel — this is a spot that both locals and visitors are discovering quickly. From perfectly crafted cocktails with an array of salads to delectable entrecote & swordfish. Truly outstanding, it was the ideal fuel for a full day of sightseeing.

After brunch, we headed into Old City to soak up Philadelphia’s rich history. A great way to cover a lot of ground in a short time is by taking the Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley Tour, which you can catch just across from the Liberty Bell Center. I love these tours because they give you flexibility: you can ride a full loop to get an overview or hop off at key sites as you like.

Our first major stop was, of course, the iconic Liberty Bell. The exhibit is free and includes fascinating displays about its history and symbolism. Just steps away is Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence and U.S. Constitution were debated and signed – a definite stop in these interesting times. Admission to Independence Hall is also free (you may need a timed ticket depending on the season), and it’s worth taking the guided tour.

If you have extra time (and I recommend making time!), the nearby National Constitution Center offers interactive exhibits that really bring the founding principles to life. This modern museum is included with a Philadelphia CityPASS®, which can be a smart buy if you plan to visit several attractions.

History lovers might also want to pop into the Museum of the American Revolution, just a few blocks away. It’s an excellent newer museum that tells the story of the Revolution with artifacts, immersive displays, and compelling personal stories you won’t find elsewhere.

After a full afternoon of walking and exploring, we were ready for a casual, delicious dinner. We made our way to Reading Terminal Market, one of the oldest and most beloved indoor markets in the United States. From classic Philly cheesesteaks to Pennsylvania Dutch specialties like soft pretzels and whoopie pies, there’s something for everyone. The hardest part was deciding what to eat!

Before heading back to the hotel, we took a little time to wander through downtown Philadelphia. We snapped the obligatory photo with the iconic LOVE sculpture at Love Park, then walked by the stunning Philadelphia City Hall, topped by the grand statue of William Penn. City Hall looks especially beautiful at night when it’s lit up against the dark sky — the perfect end to a very full day.

🗓️ Day 3: Art, Rocky, and A Fond Farewell

Our final morning in Philadelphia started with a leisurely breakfast at the hotel before packing up our things. We decided to leave our bags with the front desk so we could squeeze in a little more sightseeing before catching the bus back to New York City later that afternoon.

First stop: the Barnes Foundation. This world-renowned museum houses one of the finest collections of Impressionist, Post-Impressionist, and early Modern paintings anywhere — and it’s displayed in an intimate, salon-style setting that feels less like a museum and more like a private home. Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso — they’re all here, and seeing them up close without the usual crowds was a highlight of our trip. This museum was also included in our CityPASS®.

After soaking in the beauty of the Barnes, we strolled up the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia’s grand cultural boulevard. At the end of the Parkway, you can’t resist joining a few other visitors for a classic photo op at the Rocky Statue, located in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

This mother-daughter trip was truly special. Sharing cocktails at sunset, exploring history side by side, and introducing my daughter to one of my favorite cities in the United States was such a gift. I like to think of this visit as just an appetizer for her — a first taste of Philadelphia’s rich culture, vibrant food scene, and deep history. I encouraged her to come back again, perhaps with friends or even on her own, to discover more of what makes Philly such a wonderful destination.

By mid-afternoon, it was time to collect our bags, catch an Uber to the bus station, and head back to New York City — hearts (and phones) full of memories from a perfect three days in Philadelphia.
