Its my 40+++ birthday next Friday and I can hardly wait. Why am I not telling you which one of my 40s is the right number (42,45, 47) is because I live under some illusion that I am still in my mid-30s…
OK… not really but someone actually said that to me last year. Mid-30s….bwah ha ha… I’ve got teenagers so there is only so much ‘slight of hand’ that you can do with your age.
I was tweeting with a professional organizer colleague of mine today and I could NOT believe that she had teenagers, was in her mid 40s and married for 25 years. Really? REALLY? There is no way. I told her that she did not look older then her mid 30s.
She then said she was YOUNG AT HEART… young at heart??? Honey, you are still very young – period. As am I. Don’t let the snide comments that your teenage kids and adult nieces make, set you back (o.k. those are my kids and my nieces). I am having the time of my life in my 40s and hope that it only continues into my 50s. Gosh, my mom is approaching a big, big birthday and she is kicking butt. {Won’t tell you how old she is because she’ll kick my butt)…
I was at a conference in the spring and one of the speakers gave a great keynote about who she was. It prompted a series of blog post with the #ThisIsMe hashtag. Many posts were a raw, exposed maybe even negative but I don’t want to go that way. I want to reflect on the good great things in my life. So here is a re-cap of my almost 50 years (yes, that is a hint to my real age).
1. I have lived in Paris, France – for a year.
2. I have given birth – three times.
3. I recently went on a zip line in the forest and loved it. I would consider going on a Bungee Jump in New Zealand – only New Zealand.
4. I have taught hundreds (maybe thousands) of kids how to swim.
5. I have re-new my vows with my husband in the Cape of Good Hope, South Africa.
6. I have been heartbroken more than once.
7. I have broken someone’s heart.
8. I have seen the Pope.
9. I was fired from my first job because my boss thought I was sleeping with our young CEO. The truth is she was sleeping with him and I figured it out. BTW, he liked me as a friend…I’m sure that didn’t help my cause.
10. I have often wondered why my sister is so petite & I am not. You’d think God could have evened that out.
11. I took German for two years in CEGEP and I still can’t speak it. I would like to learn how to speak Italian.
12. I cry when I see real works of art in Museums – why? Because I am seeing the real thing not a reproduction, poster or fake… the REAL THING.
13. I would give my right arm if I could have just one more day with my father (when he was larger than life).
14. I intend on travelling to Europe with my mother in the next 3 years.
15. I respect my father-in-law immensely and care for my mother-in-law very much.
16. I also want to work abroad.
17. I was given prestigious student award in CEGEP and a friend of mine was floored (because she thought she was going to get it). I had no idea it even existed.
18. I want to work at Starbucks. No change my mind, I want to own a Tim Horton’s franchise and retire young…
19. I like some swear words (please don’t tell my children).
20. I will volunteer in a developing country before I die.

Happy Birthday – will you be at #BlogHer13 for the big day? Should I have a cupcake to celebrate? Champagne too?
Yes, I was at Blogher for the big day. I had a great time telling everyone it was my birthday. I love celebrating my birthday… much to my families chagrin. Maybe if they made a bigger deal of it, I wouldn’t have to do it for myself. Oh well, we all have our foibles, right?
Fabulous post Margarita…..You are such a rockstar at any age ….. And the comment about giving your right arm for just one more day with your Dad, really hit home for me ….. I feel the same way….*smile
Kristen, thanks so much for your kind words. I lost my dad on Dec. 23 of 2012 so it is all pretty raw for me. Thanks for commenting on that in particular. Made me feel that someone read my post in detail…. just what bloggers want… to know they touched someone’s heart.
I loved reading this fantabulous list Margarita! Reflecting on where you’ve been and where you’re going is a great gratitude exercise. Speaking of exercise, might I suggest #21. I intend to increase my physical and spiritual energy needed to accomplish all of the above by joining a gym and participating in yoga and pilates classes with my inspiring friend Bookalicious. 😉
Goodness, GF… I just read this comment. Yes, it is on my to do list. I have been lazy but I need to get into shape for sure. Thanks my inspiring friend, Wanda!
I promise Mallery… I won’t say anything about the wacky things that you did at #SoFabCon… Kidding 😉
I love this post!! What a great list to have to remind yourself of all you have done, where you have been, and where you are going!!
This is a great list! Look at all the things you’ve done, places you’ve been, and aspects of YOU! I need to do this. Thanks so much for sharing!
You are so funny! You know what my mom did when she turned 50? She went on a Vegas week trip… didn’t even tell us. She always tells me you’re as young as you feel, so you can be 21 forever! But what a life you have lived, be proud of those years!
It sounds like you have had a great life thus far, with many more to come! Also, I won’t tell your children you like some swear words if you don’t tell mine
Wow… you have had quite a life so far and I am sure you have plenty of fun experiences in front of you… 40 shmorty… you are the age that you feel
Excatly… thanks for dropping by Shauna!
Love all your accomplishments and what you set out to do!
If you have any other suggestions as to what I can do… bring it on. I am open to ideas 🙂
I’ve heard a phrase once…maybe it’s a quote said by someone smart – ‘how old would you be if you don’t know how old you are?’. pretty profound, right?
I love that… I will have to use it in another post…Thanks for dropping by Amy Lee, I hope you can come back!
great post and what a list!! Congrats on lifes accomplishments and for living young, happy birthday!!!
It has been fun and I can only assume it is going to get better as my children get older and I can share more of life’s experience with them.
Wow!!What an Amazing list!!
Nice to reflect when I feel sorry for myself. I have had a wonderful life so far.
I am quickly approaching the big 40, and I refuse to just sit back and grow old! Happy Birthday early!
Its o.k to get older. Just don’t start feeling like your life is over at 40… In fact, it has just begun.
