Requiem for a vacuum cleaner–Sears comes to the rescue… again

In October, 2012 my husband and I celebrated our 19th wedding anniversary.  This is a pretty big deal.  There are many things that you cannot say lasts 19 years… the dishes we started with –> replaced… the car we started with –-> sold…. the first house we bought –> sold two houses ago…the iron we got for a wedding present –> replaced 4 irons ago (we haven’t had much luck with those)… the vacuum cleaner… well that’s a whole other story.
We got a vacuum cleaner from my sister-in-law 19 years ago. Not a glamorous, sentimental or traditional wedding gift but a practical (and necessary, nonetheless).
I cannot say I was impressed with this gift. I was a modern working women with the whole life ahead of me… why on earth would I want a tool made for domestic chores.  Really? R-e-a-l-l-y?  It screamed ‘little woman’, ‘housewife’, ‘maid’.
 
We were registered for Wedgewood Fine China and Waterford Crystal and silver place settings from Birks… but you chose a vacuum cleaner… really? It was that a cryptic message of some sort, wasn’t it?
Right about now, I am eating crow because that vacuum cleaner is on its last legs but it still WORKS after 1 apartment, 3 houses, three kids, two dogs and countless parties.  Did I mention is was a Kenmore? As in Sear’s in-house brand.  Being on its last legs does mean that the levers that hold the cord in place are broken, the tabs that hold the attachments in place are cracked, the plug has been replaced at least once and the cord has been run over by the vacuum cleaner hundreds of times. The thing is after 19 – yes, NINTEEN years – its now time to get a new vacuum cleaner.

Then came along a this nifty Sears Point Card courtesy of Sears.  Whoo Hoo, all I could think of was: ‘we need a new vacuum cleaner and we’re going back to the best vacuum cleaner maker – ever! Thanks to Sears Canada for providing me with a Sears Point Card for our purchase.  I have to admit, I had let me Sears credit card lapse but with the 2% back for purchases, going on your Sears Points Card, it makes more sense now then ever to use it. **

So I set out for a romantic evening with my husband reminiscing about all the wonderful years we have had together and all the times our trusted Kenmore vacuum cleaner has helped us clean up the mess….(can you hear the violins playing in the background?)

There so many to choose from: Dyson (oooo….ahhhh), Kenmore, Hoovers, Sharks, Miele, Bissell, Eureka, Electrolux (yes, Betty, they still make them).  We had to decide between canister and uprights.

 My husband like the light weight of both the Hoover and Eureka but the price on the latter was tempting him.  I was blinded by the marketing flashiness of the Dyson and the reputation of the European Miele… Then there were all the Sears Kenmore’s to pick from.

I was attracted to the sturdy traditional looking Hoover Windtunnel with a smaller attachment accessory that would be great for cleaning the care out side or going up the stairs.  Since this was my gift to my husband for our wedding anniversary, I finally just conceded defeat and let him choose…

I pull out my Sears Points cards and paid for his new vacuum cleaner: a Hoover Air with WindTunnel technology, a HEPA filter and a bagless system.  All features we were both eyeing.  Hubby picked up the light box and with a quick unpacking we became owners of beautiful new household appliance… oh how life has changed from being single with no kids.

I salute our 19 year old Kenmore and I welcome its new replacement.  One month down 18 years and 11 months to go.
