We are a very busy household. With a family of six, we are always on the go. To add to the chaos, we have four drivers and only two cars. If we have a busy weekend, it can get a bit stressful when all of us need a car. Whether we need it for work, the girls are planning a trip with their friends or I need to take my elderly mother to an appointment, we cannot always manage with two cars. There are times when we have considered renting a car for a few days just to make life a little bit easier. I was looking to unlock car rental AARP deals and discounts – but how?
When I was freshly out of college and did not have my own car, my brother walked me through the financials of car ownership. He broke it all down for me: there are bi-weekly car payments, insurance, gas and maintenance. I would have to consider paying for a parking space (in addition to my apartment rent). He quickly pointed out, I would not be using the car during the week because I traveled on public transport to my ride share meeting spot. This was a rather large outlay of cash for a young adult just out of university.

My brother made the very convincing pointed that instead of owning a car, it was cheaper to budget for the occasional car rental. I took his advice to heart and through the years, I have rented a car to take road trips out of the city, head downtown for events or even move apartments. Now as a mom of three young adults, I have revisited that sage advice and decided to rent a car to meet our growing needs.

With a large family, I’m always trying to find deals and discounts to stretch our budget. I find there are advantages to belonging to an organization which provide great benefits to its members. At a very reasonable annual fee (under $20), in my books, AARP’s member benefits is a winner! With many car rental options, in addition to AARP deals and discounts on hotels, entertainment, and financial services providers there are lots of valuable discounts and benefits for families. I easily created an online account and registered. I was pleasantly surprised that I could also sign up my husband for free! That was a bonus!

With my brand new AARP membership, I went to the website and reviewed my options. I had three different car rental options to choose from: Avis, Budget and Payless. I’m a big fan of Budget and have rented from them the last two times (Portugal and Ireland) plus they had some great offers with my AARP member benefits.
Benefits
Here are some of the AARP deals and discounts plus the benefits on car rentals from Budget:
- Enjoy savings of up to 30% off Budget base rates
- Free upgrade (one car class upgrade subject to availability on compact through full-size four-door car booking)
- Unlimited mileage on most rentals
- Additional Driver Fee waived (must be over 25)
- Worry-free promise of minimal contact pick-up & drop-off
- Garmin GPS for $6.99/day
- 24-hour roadside assistance available
- Frequent traveler miles/points
- In the event of damage to a rental vehicle, as an AARP Member, my liability is limited to the first $5,000 of damage without purchase of a Loss Damage Waiver. I can always purchase a Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) for the remaining $5,000 if you choose*
- Offer is available for U.S. and Canadian residents only for rentals at participating locations in the U.S and Canada
*Review your personal auto insurance policy and/or your credit card benefits to determine if your coverage extends to the operation of a rental vehicle. If it does not, or you do not have personal auto insurance, the additional LDW coverage can be purchased from Budget at the time of rental.
AARP deals and discounts

I easily made a reservation on the AARP members benefits website. There is a company side-by-side comparison of rates along with a variety of cars to choose from – compact right up to full size. It’s easy to opt for a smaller car when you know, that when available, you can upgrade one class up for free! The reservation process was straightforward, and I saved approximately 30% when I used my AARP deals and discount code. One of the biggest savings was there was no added charge for an additional driver. I could put my husband’s name on the rental agreement and either one of us can use the car! That provides great flexibility for our family!

This is quite the deal for a three-day weekend rental (note: depending on rental dates or locations, results may vary). Opting for a car rental every once in a while, makes my life easier. I won’t have to negotiate having the car for the weekend with my husband or my two daughters. I plan on having a great weekend on the road again with no worries! The savings alone have paid with the yearly membership fee. I couldn’t be more pleased for the rental car deals and my AARP member benefits.

I actually always thought this was just open to Americans also. Who knew? Well now I do and could use this in future especially based on the number of road trips I take.
I never knew this before but I think it would be very useful to you for the amount of US travel that you usually do. Bonus is your spouse gets membership for free.
Great that they offer such benefits and discounts! If this was available here, I would gladly register and be a member.
Wow! This is absolutely a great deal! I can’t wait to browse this up and know more about this. Thanks for sharing!
I know someone that will be glad about all these discounts. Thanks for all these details!

Be sure and remind them that the second driver is free. That’s a great savings for seniors!
I may say that this is an awesome deal that we really need to know plus the benefit of being a member with huge discount is really something else. Thanks for sharing such amazing things to us.
One of the reasons I love blogging is to be able to help people. If I can encourage someone to travel, I’m happy. The more we can save, the more we can travel.
