Where’s the best place to watch the sunset in Gulf Shores?

Sharing is caring!

The Best Place to watch the sunset in Gulf Shores is Fort Morgan
Barefoot Beach House in Fort Morgan, Alabama

With the beaches now opened in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Alabama, I pine to be back on a beach watching the sunset on the Gulf of Mexico. I fell in love with this area a few years ago and returned in 2019. There are a variety of activities that will draw you in from sailing, camping, trying your hand at glass blowing, painting or try something that scares you (like zip-lining) but nothing should keep you off a beach when the sun is shining.

With such an active itinerary, you may want to hit the beach at the end of the day to watch one of their killer sunsets. There is no question, once you discover this area you will be on a constant quest for the best place to watch the sunset in Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, Alabama.

Enjoy dinner & a beautiful sunset

The Best Place to watch the sunset in Gulf Shores is at The Gulf. Dinner and drinks by the water.

Besides being a great place to eat, The Gulf has a wonderful beach and sitting area where you can watch the sunset or look up in awe as the Blue Angels perform a flyby on practice days. On select days you can watch this precision squadron of F/A-18 Hornets fly over Pensacola Bay and the Intercoastal Waterway. It was all pretty impressive and The Gulf is a great place to do that.

Romantic Sunset Cruise

Another option for the best place to watch the sunset in Gulf Shores is not onshore but on the water. For a romantic evening, take a sunset cruise with Sail Wild Hearts. You may be lucky enough to be escorted out by a pod of dolphins as you cruise in the Gulf of Mexico.

There really is nothing lovelier than a sunset cruise on the Gulf of Mexico.  We boarded a 53-foot open ocean catamaran for a two-hour tour. The tours sail the turquoise waters of Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, Alabama and Perdido Key, Florida. This is the perfect opportunity to take great sunset pictures as I did. You will have a great view of the Intracoastal waterway and the spectacular Intracoastal bridge.

There were soft drinks/water and light hors d’oeuvres. As a nice touch, adults may bring beverages and small coolers. Sail Wild Hearts offers a variety of tours from snorkelling and kayaking, family adventure sail, dolphin + Blue Angel watching excursions. On our particular cruise, we spotted a few dolphins in the distance but for the most part, enjoyed the spectacular sunset.

Little Lagoon Pass – Local best kept secret

Shhhh… it’s a best-kept secret. When I asked my close friend, currently living in the area, where the best place to watch the sunset in Gulf Shores was, she pointed me towards Fort Morgan! “There are many special spots to watch our glorious sunsets but one of my favourites is Little Lagoon Pass.” As the best sunsets face in the north-west direction, watching from the parking area at Little Lagoon Pass was ideal. It is a couple of miles west of Hwy. 59 on West Beach Boulevard. I’ve placed it on the map below so you’ll have a better idea where to find it but it’s one of the best places to see the sunset!

We rented bikes and went for a tour of the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail in the Gulf Shores State Park. While there, we stopped to take this picture as we traversed the boardwalk. It was a lovely place to watch the water foul and take in the stillness of the water. There are many places along the new 15 mile Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail within the Gulf Shores State Park that you could stop and just take in the natural beauty that is the backcountry trail.

You could also cross over the highway on the overhead pass and head to the beach. There is a public pavilion with park facilities there. Want something more special? Have dinner at Perch in the Hilton Hotel. The view from the second-floor balcony was extraordinary. You can read more about that dinner experience here.

Fort Morgan Beach

Fort Morgan Beach – The Barefoot Beach House –

The best place to watch the sunset in Gulf Shores may not actually be there but in Fort Morgan. Once again, I’ll have to give a shoutout to this luxury accommodation on the gulf coast – Barefoot Beach House was an amazing property in Fort Morgan and from the comfort of the deck, we took in the most beautiful sunsets. The reflection on the windows just captured a peaceful feeling. I love this view so much that you will find it on my YouTube Channel.

Having a cocktail on the border

The Flora-Bama Lounge is located uniquely on the Orange Beach, Alabama and Perdido Key, Florida line.  You might want to watch the setting sun from a famous beach bar, with a Bushwacker in hand. The Flora-Bama is the home of the Bushwacker, a milkshake-like beverage with five types of alcohol it is the bomb. The best part is you can start outside and then make your way inside for a full night of entertainment with live music.
