UPDATE: 2021 – This hotel was recently acquired by the Pierre & Vacances chain but still remains a solid choice for your stay in Costa Brava. The hotel will reopen in April 2021 and is currently accepting reservations from then until the end of October. It appears the hotel is closed from December until April 2022. This is not surprising as Blanes (and the Costa Brava region) tend to be a sunny summer destination. Once again, please only travel if necessary and adhere to local and national COVID-19 protocols. There is no reason you cannot #DreamNowTravelLater.

As I begin the post-TBEX Conference part of my trip, we find ourselves in Blanes, just a town over from Lloret de Mar (where the conference was held). We will be staying 2 nights at a hotel by the beach in Costa Brava, Hotel Horitzo. The view is stunning, the beach is right across the street and the rooms are large and comfortable. What more could you want?

I spent the day in the Spa at the Hotel Horitzo in Blanes with Lauren.  It was more like a relaxing morning hopping from the pool, to the hot tub, to the steam bath, to the sauna and back around all over again.  I don’t usually take the time to just sit and appreciate the warmth of a steam bath (that was scented with eucalyptus and lavender – nice) but this was a special treat at the hotel.  The spa is in the basement of the hotel so it is very quiet and away from the busy beach outside.

The only downfall (which was literally a fall) was when Lauren fell on the black slate floor which covers the entire area of the spa.  It is lovely to look at and comfortable to walk on but extremely slippery when there is water between you and the floor.  Definitely, something to be cautious with, so bring some flip-flops or even the complimentary slippers down with you. This morning she feels the impact of the fall.  Hopefully, it is just a bruise and not something more serious.

I did want to tell you a bit more about this hotel.  It was opened in 1963 and until recently was family-owned hotel, it is now under the Pierre & Vacances brand.  It is located at the southern point of Blanes in Costa Brava (basically, where it begins).  I love the location of the hotel, right on the Mediterranean Sea with a view of Tossa de Mar to the north and the coast leading to Barcelona to the south.

We stayed in a comfortable sized room with two double beds placed close togeter (I love that set up).  You can toss and turn all you want, as I have a tendency to do without bothering my daughter’s sleep.

The room has a large balcony with a breeze that comes later at night.  It is May and still not warm enough to swim for an extended period of time in the Sea.  The hotel clerk said she won’t go in until mid June but she can imagine us Canadians  would have no problem with the temperature.  I am not sure about that.

There were  few really good things about the hotel:

  • Its proximity to the beach and the main area (Opposite the hotel you will find the Paseo Maritimo)
  • It was far enough from the main ‘strip’ that noise was not a problem
  • It had a large closet, an updated bathroom
  • Fantastic spa area and gym
  • It had beach towels for our use and a bathroom so we didn’t need to enter the hotel in our wet bathing suits.

What I didn’t like:

  • It had a tiny, tiny TV.  We don’t watch a lot during the day but at night I loved watching TV in every language (Spanish, Catalan, French, Italian, Catalan, German and Russian).

  • The parking was far away, had we paid. Since we visited in the off-season, we were able to park on the street without charge.
  • The breakfast was good but not fantastic.  Don’t let this dissuade you from a stay.  I just like fresh fried eggs and they only came scrambled. Otherwise, there was a decent selection of bread, pastries, meats and cheeses.
  • There is a cost to the spa of 15 Euros (which if you want to go for a few days, will add up).  I don’t mind the cost too much but I thought 15 Euros was a lot.

Overall, we loved our stay and would recommend this establishment highly.  It was very, very clean, quiet and make sure to ask for a sea view.  No question about it.  You came for the view so GET IT!

Disclosure: I received accommodations that were arranged through #TBEX and the Costa Barva Tourism Board.  All opinions are honest and are my own and my daughter’s.
