If you’re looking for an escape from the humdrum, a few days in Canada’s Quebec province may be the luxury getaway you’re seeking. Nestled between the St. Lawrence River and the Charlevoix Mountains, Baie‑Saint‑Paul is a charming village that captures the very essence of Quebec’s natural elegance – just a 90‑minute drive from Quebec City. On my first visit, the softly falling snow blanketed the landscape, turning the Charlevoix countryside into a tranquil winter dream. It’s the kind of escape that lures couples from Quebec City, Montreal, and beyond. For me, Le Germain Charlevoix holds a more personal connection; it was a cherished retreat for my brother and his late wife, a place where romance seemed to settle into every rustic-meets-modern detail. It remains, without question, the perfect setting for a romantic couple’s getaway. I was happy to introduce my husband and a few international travelers to this unique property.
Scottish Highland cows and sheep graze nearby, while during the summer, a fragrant kitchen garden supplies herbs and vegetables to Les Labours Restaurant, the hotel’s signature farm-to‑table dining experience. Every element feels intimate, authentic, and perfectly curated for couples seeking both comfort and connection.
My Room’s Rustic Elegance
My suite was in one of the quadrant buildings steps away from the main hotel. It was on the second floor (with no elevator). The hall windows face into a private courtyard, but my room window faces the farmer’s field with the livestock and the mountains in the background. This location provided both privacy and peacefulness.
At the top of the stairs, there is a lounge area with hanging chairs and a picnic table providing the perfect stage for family gatherings or games. You overlook the courtyard providing another space to explore and enjoy.
My suite had high ceilings and rustic wooden beams. There was a standalone claw-foot tub and a lounge chair right by the window. The four-poster bed was wonderfully comfortable with high-end bedding, a cushy bathrobe and slippers.
I cannot highlight the peacefulness and quiet of this hotel room. With the exception of the occasional mooing cow, it was very relaxing. This property has rooms in the main building as well as a few other two- and multiple-story buildings. Adjacent to one of these buildings was the Nordic Spa.
The Exceptional Spa
I won’t lie, I wanted to return to this property just to spend time in the Nordic spa. Don’t get me wrong, I loved my stay, but this spa was incredibly appealing even in the dead of winter. If you have enjoyed a day outside on the ski slopes or cross-country skiing, you will enjoy the spa!
Available for guests and their guests, the spa is spacious and has various stations providing hot, cold, and cooling options. After your arrival, one of the staff guides you through the cycle of hot saunas, and cold plunges. You can go from a warm relaxing pool to a shockingly cold plunge, from the eucalyptus steam room to slathering your body with ice chips, and then relax in a dry sauna to cool down in a cold shower. After completing the circuit a few times, you can relax in the warm lounge area with relaxing spa music and ice water.
I cannot say enough about how enjoyable this spa is. I returned earlier this year so I could introduce my friends visiting from Colombia, Ireland and Portugal to the joys of a Nordic Spa in the Canadian wilderness. Well, as wild as you can be in a luxury boutique hotel.
You are pampered from arrival with plush bathrobes and flip-flops. Large beach towels are also provided, with refreshments available to keep you hydrated. The pool is a quiet area where cell phones are prohibited and conversations are held in whispers. It can be tempting to laugh uproariously, but the idea is to relax, meditate, and enjoy nature at its best.
Building an Appetite
After a few hours, we dressed and headed for an early dinner at Le Bercail. We had a late lunch and all were pretty pleased with our choices: Spaghetti Bolognese, Salmon Tartar (exceptional), St. Lawrence River Seafood Chowder. The atmosphere was very ski chalet with a roaring fire and relaxing music.
When I stayed a few years ago, the breakfast buffet at Les Labours on the second floor was so large, fresh and had a fantastic variety. From made-to-order omelets to hearty oatmeal and a variety of breads and pastries. Truly one of the best breakfast buffets I have ever had.
In the evening, this restaurant transforms into a gourmet experience, led by Chef Patrick Dubé and his team proposes a custom farm-to-table menu using local angus beef, herbs and vegetables from their garden and cheeses native to the Quebecois terroir. This is truly one of the best restaurants in the region!
Charlevoix Day Trips from Le Germain
Le Germain Charlevoix is your ideal launchpad for the Flavour Trail (La Route des Saveurs) – Quebec’s pioneering agritourism route just minutes away. Sample triple-cream cheeses at Famille Migneron, Fromagerie St-Fidèle (the perfect cheese curds for poutine), or lavender at Azulée Farm, then ferry to Île-aux-Coudres for Boulangerie Bouchard’s famous sugar pies. Hotel concierge maps energy-matched itineraries – Flavour Trail charcuterie boards, artisanal cheeses and ciders make perfect spa picnic returns.
The Perfect Charlevoix Retreat
Winter sports enthusiasts will appreciate Le Germain Charlevoix as a comfortable base for exploring the region’s snowy adventures. Just 25 minutes away, Le Massif de Charlevoix offers world-class alpine skiing across 52 trails, with stunning St. Lawrence River views from many runs and options for all skill levels – ideal for a rewarding half-day outing. Even closer at 15 minutes, Mont Grand-Fonds provides gentler slopes, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and fat biking on well-groomed paths, complete with cozy heated huts for breaks.
