Sagrada Família Update 2026

The first time I stepped inside Barcelona’s Sagrada Família was back in 2015, during a trip that left me spellbound by its organic spires and kaleidoscope stained glass. I updated my original post in 2019, marvelling at the progress, but now – in 2026 – the basilica has hit a true milestone with the completion of the exterior of its central Tower of Jesus Christ. On 20 February, the upper arm of the monumental cross was installed, crowning the temple’s tallest and most iconic feature.

This timing feels poetic, aligning with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death – the genius whose nature-inspired vision turned a simple church into a global wonder. Just as I noted in my earlier visit, Gaudí’s fusion of Gothic and Art Nouveau lives on, now even more vividly shaping Barcelona’s skyline. You can take a full tour of Gaudí’s Art Nouveau buildings around Barcelona.

At 172.5 metres, the Tower of Jesus Christ anchors the basilica’s six central towers, surrounded by the Evangelists’ towers (linked by bridges) and topped by the Virgin Mary tower. Its twelve levels of stone panels and twelve façades use a post-tensioned stone-and-steel system for enduring strength.

The final panels reached 142.5 metres in December 2024, followed by the 29-metre terminal base starting in May 2025. This section features the inscription “Tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altissimus” in white glazed ceramic and brick, encircled by sculpted palms – a fitting pinnacle of praise.

The crowning four-armed cross, 17 metres tall and 13.5 metres wide, gleams in white glazed ceramic and glass. Made in Germany in 2025, it was assembled on-site 54 metres above the nave and hoisted in seven pieces, with the upper arm placed last.

Inside that upper arm awaits the Agnus Dei sculpture by Italian artist Andrea Mastrovito, bringing Gaudí’s dream of a Divine Lamb at the summit to life—much like the whimsical details (grapes on spires!) that charmed me on my climb years ago.

Why This Matters for Barcelona Lovers

As the basilica’s chief architect Antoni Gaudí shared, this is the fruit of deep study of Gaudí’s legacy and a pledge to finish his masterpiece. With 2026 events honouring the centenary, it’s a banner year that cements Barcelona as Europe’s architectural heartbeat—and Catalonia’s heritage as timeless.

Interior work continues into 2027-2028, so if you’re planning a revisit, this is the moment to book. The Sagrada Família still feels like a living forest of faith, now taller and more triumphant than ever. Have you been? Share your thoughts below!
