The dog days of summer are coming to a close and we find ourselves looking at the start of school in just a few days.  Last week on #LinkedMoms Chat (every Wed. 8pm EST) we were talking about back to school and all that that entails.  One of the questions was do you have a  family launch pad…
Knowing that many would likely have one but not know what it is called, I provided a link to my “Launch Pad” pinterest board.

A launch pad is an area that is designated for your coats, boots, mitts, backpacks for your family to “launch” their day.  Although there are many beautiful built-in options all you really need is some hooks, a bench, a shelf for a basket and a good label maker to make sure you label…everything.
The key to keep a family organized is when you know that everything has a home. If kids know that that basket, shelf, cupboard is ‘theirs’, they are more likely to put it back… (I said likely… I didn’t say they would for sure…I’m an organizer NOT a miracle worker!).
You may also want to have a nerve centre somewhere close by.

A Nerve Centre (as Peter Walsh likes to call it) is an area where you find and store all the information that a family needs to communicate. It contains a calendar, pockets that hold all the forms, homework or agendas that need to be seen.  It can also house baskets for each child so that all their ‘stuff’ can be in one place.
These baskets are a great place to toss items that manage to find themselves on the kitchen table, in the family room, on top of the dryer (you see where I’m going with this)… It is stray items that need to go back to their owner and their own home!

Make sure that you label each basket so your kids know that they should look in there to find things.  I also use a variation of this with small baskets that I place on the stairs on so on the way up the stairs, they pick up on the way up.
So if you want to put together a Launch Pad & Nerve Centre, these are things that you might want to purchase:

  1. Wall pockets to put all those important papers.

2. Sturdy hooks that have a few hooks for each person. One for a coat and the other for coats.

3. Baskets for holding all the extras.

4. A bench for kids to sit and and a place to place shoes & boots

5. An overhead shelf helps place those lovely baskets that hold all the extras.

Launch Pads are essential in keeping your home organized. I hope these tips help you at the start of this school year.

  1. OMG, these are awesome. I’m definitely going to invest in a launch pad. Definitely needed with all the boots, shoes, bags and coats. Thanks for sharing this. The nerve center will be good as the girls get older.

  2. We do have sort of a “launch pad” in our front entrance. It’s really geared toward my little one with a storage bench for all of her shoes, etc. a shelf for her sun glasses (she has quite a collection) and several hooks at her level to hand her coats, back packs, etc.

  3. Although I’ve never really thought about what to call it we do have somewhat of a launch pad in our front entrance. We have a bench with storage, a shelf for things like sunglasses and kid height hooks for my daughter to hang her coat, backpack etc. Actually it’s really her launch pad!
