About Cape May, NJ
Situated at the southern tip of the Jersey Shore, Cape May is a charming seaside town known for its Victorian architecture, pristine beaches, and relaxed vibe. The city is designated the Cape May Historic District, a National Historic Landmark due to its concentration of Victorian buildings. In fact, it has the second-largest collection of Victorian houses, behind San Francisco.

Cape May began hosting vacationers from the Philadelphia area in the mid-18th century and was considered one of the finest resorts in America by the 19th century. High season runs from May to September but the fall was a wonderful time to visit. The whole town was decked out in Halloween decorations and ghostly offerings. Hotel availability is easier and more affordable. This is a very vibrant (and busy) summer destination to consider during shoulder season.
How to Get to Cape May, NJ
By Air
Unless you have a private jet or a chartered airplane, there is no commercial flights available to fly into Cape May. The nearest airport to Cape May is Atlantic City (ACY) Airport which is 40.6 miles away. Other nearby airports include Philadelphia (PHL) (67.8 miles), Baltimore (BWI) (95.8 miles) and Reagan Washington (DCA) (114.9 miles).
By Car
There really is no other way to get to Cape May than with a car. The route from Philadelphia was very easy without traffic. If you are coming from other major cities, always check the fastest route and traffic to make your drive an enjoyable one.
From Philadelphia:
A mere 90-minute drive makes Cape May easily reachable for a quick escape from the city’s bustle. Take the scenic route down the Garden State Parkway or Route 9 for an enchanting coastal journey.
From New York City:
Between 2.5 – 3 hours, you can leave the urban landscape behind and immerse yourself in the tranquillity of Cape May. The drive from the city on I-95 to the Garden State Parkway is a perfect prelude to the coastal retreat that awaits.
From Atlantic City:
If you’re starting in Atlantic City, a scenic 60- to 90-minute drive south on the Atlantic City Expressway connecting to the Garden State Parkway South offers a picturesque route, setting the tone for your coastal getaway.
From Baltimore and Washington, DC:
Though a bit longer, the approximately 3-hour drive from Baltimore and 3 hours 45 minutes from Washington, DC, is a journey on I-95 is well worth the unique experience that Cape May promises. The drive allows you to escape the city and delve into the distinctive charm of this coastal gem.

I was very excited to finally see a capybara (the largest rodent in the world). They were pretty adorable!

Fort Miles Battery 223:

Built in 1941 this WWII bunker was part of the Harour Defense Program to guard against German U-boat attacks. Decommissioned in 1964, it was turned over to the State of New Jersey to be used for recreational purposes. Curiosity seekers can only walk around the 6-foot-deep walls of this archaic concrete structure.

Ascend the Lighthouse:

Built in 1856, the Cape May Lighthouse is located in Cape May Point State Park, you can climb the 199 steps to the Watch Gallery. Standing 157.5 feet tall from the ground line to the ventilator ball on top, from the watch galler you will have a bird’s eye view of the Atlantic Ocean and Delaware Bay. Evening climbs are offered during full moons and new moons, weather permitting. All tours of the tower are self-guided.
Visit Cape May Point State Park:
Cape May Point State Park is free to the public, and an ideal location for birding, picnics, painting, photography, and nature walks. Explore ponds, coastal dunes, marshes, and forest habitats on one of the three hiking trails, which range from 0.5 to 2 miles in length. The shortest, the Red Trail, is wheelchair accessible. Elaine’s Cape May – Boutique, Hotel and Bar
Our hotel of choice was Elaine’s Boutique Hotel in downtown Cape May, NJ. Elaine’s is across the street from the Cape May Stage and a block from Washington Street Mall. Walking distance to the Cape May boardwalk and beautiful beach. Family-owned for decades, this boutique hotel offers modern amenities, private parking, and unique ‘Signature Nest’ rooms for a memorable stay. With two bars, a restaurant, and on-site boutique shopping, Elaine’s is both a local and returned guest favourite.

With a variety of rooms from a huge contemporary suite with a fireplace to cozy Victorian-themed rooms. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the downstairs bar where you can watch the sunset in the distance.
Where to Eat in Cape May, NJ
Phinney’s Pub in Elaine’s

Great variety and location Nestled in downtown Cape May, Phinney’s Pub offers a fantastic dining experience with great food and impeccable service. Recently renovated using the siding from a defunct fishing business, the decor is a throwback to the mainstay of Cape May – commercial fishing. The casual vibe is complemented by live music on the porch and bands playing on the weekends, making it a perfect entertainment spot for both locals and visitors.

Quincy’s Original Lobster Rolls
An authentic experience. A quaint storefront on Washington Street Mall, Quincy’s Cape May Mall is the go-to spot for those seeking a quick but genuine lobster, shrimp or crab roll. Their seafood chowder was also very good. Add a dash of seaside flavour to your culinary adventure.
The Lobster House
A bit touristy but a Cape May staple Immerse yourself in a traditional supper club atmosphere at The Lobster House. While the decor may exude a classic charm, the extensive surf and turf menu is anything but dated. A favourite among tourists, this restaurant promises a memorable dining experience.
Tisha’s

Fine Dining on Washington Street For an exceptional fine dining experience, head to Tisha’s on Washington Street. Known for its outstanding cuisine, this restaurant allows you to bring your own bottle of wine to accompany your meal. The seafood risotto is a standout dish, making Tisha’s a must-visit for connoisseurs seeking culinary excellence. Tisha’s came highly recommended and it did not disappoint – an outstanding meal!

Otherwise, head to North Cape May to the corner of Beach Ave. and Lincoln Blvd. to a small parking lot (with an unmarked beach).
Or head down further on Beach Ave. to David Douglass Sr. Memorial Park and watch the Cape May Lewes Ferry sail off into the sunset. It was a priceless experience.
