Sweet Reads Box - Canadian Subscription Box for Book Lovers #SweetReadsBox

Does it get any better than this: a best-selling novel, yummy candies, a cute pouch, cinnamon spice tea and a luxurious bar of soap infused with champagne?  If you are a book lover who appreciates a good book and a little me time when it is cold and blustery outside, then the Sweet Reads Box is the perfect gift to treat yourself to or someone you love!  I have fallen in love with this new Canadian subscription box for book lovers!  As it is, I have been keeping this a secret for a bit since I purchased a three month subscription just in time for the holiday season.  An avid reader, I wanted to share it with my mother-in-law and SURPRISE her for Christmas.  Now that she has received her gift – and loved it, I might add – I wanted to tell you all about Sweet Reads Box!

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah #SweetReadsBox Review by @DownshiftingPRO_4

I found out about Sweet Reads Box when my good friend Paula wrote a raving review of her book box and I knew this was a subscription box meant for me!  She passed on the book that she received and told me I would not be able to put it down!  She was not wrong.  I read that book in just under two days because it was a page-turner (it was so good).  That is the thing with Sweet Reads Box, they do the research to find you a great best-seller and then, they sweeten the pot.  To say the least, they had me at book and treats!  I proceeded to order my very own Sweet Reads Box and was I pleasantly surprised!  I could hardly wait to unbox it and  get started.

Shipped out in the first few days of the month, my subscription box arrived mid-month as it is delivered via Canada Post.  Once delivered, I just kicked back made some tea and enjoyed the read!  My Sweet Reads Box contained the following items:

  • The Nightingale, by Kristin Hannah
  • Danica Studio Bicicletta Pouch
  • Merci – Tea – Tea-Gram
  • Simpkins Travel Sweets – Retro Forest Fruit with Guarana
  • Perth Soap Co – Sparkling Champagne Cleaning Bar
  • Sweet Reads Box Pen & Sticky Notes

As this is a Canadian Subscription box (sorry my American and International readers), I love the idea of supporting local companies and a few of the items in the box are produced right here in Canada. Each item is carefully chosen to co-relate to some aspect of the book.  In this case, the Danica Studio large Bicicletta Pouch makes a reference to how important it was to get around the small village and riding a bicycle was essential.  A stolen bicycle was used by Vianne to deliver messages and papers.

Another sweet (pun intended) touch in the novel is when Isabelle sends letters and care packages to her husband in a POW camp.  In this spirit, Sweet Reads Box included tinned sweets which were often sent to soldiers during WWII.  Simpkins Travel Sweets were (and still are) a favourite.  I especially loved the nod to celebrations with champagne when the French were liberated and the war ended.  In my box there was a Sparkling Champagne – Cleansing Bar with Argan Oil from  The Perth Soap Co. Tying this all together, Sweet Reads Box includes a postcard with an explanation as to the significance of the items and how each relates to the novel.

Sweet Reads Box - The Nightingale - Review by @DownshiftingPRO

I cannot stress enough how well put together this subscription box is.  The attention to detail makes this a delight both to receive and to give.  After receiving my first box, I decided that Sweet Reads would be the perfect gift for my mother-in-law, who is an avid reader.  She often gets books from the library instead of buying them (as many do) however, there is a time when you just need to indulge and get a little “me time”delivered right to your home.  As she lives on the other side of the country, the convenience of having this gift delivered right to her door is priceless.  I know when she received it, that the inside would be packaged up nicely and the contents would be protected by bubble wrap.  Everything arrived intact and she was so impressed.   In my mother-in-law’s December subscription box, she received  The Child Finder by Rene Denfeld, a fun and delicious hot chocolate, Sweetsmith Gingerbread Peanut Brittle, Socksmith boot socks, Danica Studio pencil tin and an Under One Sun tin heart.

Here is a peak at that box from the @SweetReadsBox Instagram account.

A Little bit about the book: The Nightingale is the story of two sisters in World War II France.  One is married with a child and awaiting the return of her husband from a prisoner of war camp and the younger sister is a bit of a hellion that becomes a resistance fighter to proved her worth to both her scornful sister and emotional distant father.  The characters are developed to weave this story set in an occupied small town in the south of France.  Overrun by German soldiers, the lives of these two women run parallel as they both deal with the occupation in their own way.  Vianne lives from day to day trying to keep herself and her daughter alive and out of trouble but when a Nazi officer comes to live with her, the shadow of being complicit with the enemy rears its ugly head.  She finds herself trying to save her best friend (who is Jewish) and her young family. Isabelle takes more and more chances as she begins to work for the resistance guiding fallen airmen across the Spanish boarder to safety.  This historical novel is interesting and keeps you engaged in the story.

I am new to subscription boxes but I’ve enjoyed this very much.  The book was great, the sweets divine and the extras a nice indulgence.  It’s good to note that the overall value of the box exceeds the cost.  If you order a 3 or 6 month subscription, you save even more making this subscription box well worth it.  If you are giving it as a gift, the convenience of having it shipped directly to your friends or family is priceless.  It is easy to order on-line and they ship it off quickly with Canada Post! I look forward to receiving the rest of my Sweet Read Boxes in the coming months.

  1. Favourite? That’s much too hard! One of the most outstanding I’ve read in the last few years was The First Bad Man, by Miranda July.

  2. Gosh, that’s a tough one! John Saul is my favourite Author, so I’d have to go with one of his earlier books “When the Wind Blows”.

  3. Wow, this is hard, so many good ones!!!
    Kane and Abel
    East of Eden
    The Road
    The Thornbirds
    Station Eleven
    East of Eden
    The Painted Girls

  6. I loved the Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah. One of my faves, though I also adored The Nightingale.

  7. As a bookaholic I can honestly say I do not want to be cured! The Painted House by John Grisholm is y all time favourite

  8. Not sure if my comment posted so trying again

That is a hard decision for a book addict! Lol Maybe Little Women or The Diary of Anne Frank

  9. i CAN’T honestly say I have one book that is my favorite. I do however like to read YA AND if its FAE related I’ll probably read it (or re-read it)
I just finished a book tonight so now have to figure out what to re-read, probably one of my series, I’m doing pretty good for 2018, I’ve already read 6 books.

  10. My favorite book of all times is what fueled my interest to read many moon ago… The Plain Truth of Jodi Picoult. One of many of her novels that I have enjoyed!

  11. My favourite book is The Hunger Games! I love the entire series! I could read it a million times and never get sick of it!

  12. Honestly I read so much that I wouldn’t be able to pick a favourite, I’d have trouble putting together a top ten list!

  13. I read a lot (like for hours every day with few exceptions), so it’s difficult to pick a favourite book. There are just too many to choose from. But if you insist I pick something, I’d say it’s Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake.

  14. I am a fan of John Grisham who wrote many book I have enjoyed over the years. I will pick the Firm.

  15. What a great idea! Love the concept of a new book in the mail with extra treats inside to compliment the book.

Favourite books are so hard to choose. I loved The LION, THE WITCH AND THE WARDROBE, and Harry Potter series for read-aloud books with the kids. Loved Medicine Walk, The Ocean at The End of the Lane, and the Prophet just to mention a few others too. But I am always on the hunt for my next favourite. Maybe it’ll be in a Sweet Reads box!

  16. What a great idea! I love reading and surprise books in the mail are a delight. Not to mention the treats that go with.

Picking a favourite book is near impossible for me, as I have loved many at different points for different reasons; the Harry Potter series and Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe books were great read-aloud books to read with my kids. I loved The Ocean at The End of the Lane, by Neil Gaiman, Medicine Walk by Richard Wagaemese, and The Prophet by Khalil Gibran all for different reasons. ultimately, i am Lways up for my next favourite though.
