What a year! No one can say that 2022 was uneventful. With the Pandemic still at play, many of us turned to solitary activities: exercise, cooking, reading. My choice was the latter in a big way.

For a few years, I have participated in the Goodreads Book Challenge but I was, at time, a reluctant participant. I use Goodreads as a means of keeping track of books that I’ve read through the years on my own and with the three book clubs I’ve frequented in 26 years.

My highest achievement to date was hovering in the low 20s. I read” I told myself “that is more than a book a month”. I smugly thought I was ‘well read’. I read Margaret Atwood for goodness sake (albeit kicking and screaming – it took me years, no, decades to recover from Surfacing). My husband struggled to finish an audiobook (we’ve been listening to Alexander Hamilton – the 812-page tome NOT the musical) for months. The upside is it got me interested in audiobooks.

The more l got into Goodreads, the more l found my peeps. Little did I know that my efforts paled in comparison. Travel blogger, writer and Goodreads pro, Lisa Goodmurphy (Gone with the Family), has become a friend and mentor of sorts. Liking and commenting on my reviews kept me curious about her book recommendations. She also provided motivation to read more. Lisa reads an unbelievable amount of books in a week and this year she has surpassed her goal by 50%. Could I read 150 books in one year? – not likely but she did!

I have also found new travel blogging friends that were also Goodreaders (see what I did there?). These men and women shared their love of books and travels on Goodreads. I seem to like them that much more because we have similar tastes in books.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, I developed an obsession with Scandinavian murder/thrillers, Latin language serials, British crime dramas and food shows on Netflix. I couldn’t travel so conversations in other languages, and panoramic scenes in other countries calmed my wandering nerves. I dreamed of travelling to the UNESCO Cities of Literature.

Goodreads Book Challenge of 2022

In 2022, I began to read more because I wanted to use my imagination to take me away. I found #booksofInstagram on Instagram and #booktok on Tik Tok (included my links if you care to follow). There was the Libby app and a subscription to the Toronto Public Library. I was in it for the long haul.

All of these motivators and fellow book challengers proved to help me reach and surpass my Goodreads Book Challenge goals. At least three times, l increased the number of books that l was going to read in 2022. As of today, l’ve come in at 42. That is a 62% increase from 2021 and 282% in 2020.

I started the year strong. I read some of the best books of the year in that reading streak. I wanted to clear my mind and enjoy some free time by myself in Toronto. I spent two weeks in the dead of winter at my brother’s apartment indulging in nothing but audiobooks, good food and the occasional light libation. It was glorious.

Here are my recommendations of books you should read in 2023 and a few you may want to avoid. Happy Reading!

Book Recommendations

My Favourite Hardcopy and Audiobook

black cake book

Yes, I did read and listen to this book numerous times. I loved the audiobook because there were different accents of different characters. Multiple generations, multiple countries. An all-around great read. You can read my full review on Goodreads.

It is a story of secrets. Secrets that are kept for a long time. Secrets between parents and children. Secrets between friends. Secrets between partners. And the consequences of keeping those secrets.

I couldn’t put it down – Audiobook

The Reading List Sara Nisha Adams Goodreads

What a wonderful story. I recommend that you listen to it. With various voices it is rich. Even though it was fourteen hours l listened to it over 2 days as I could not put it away.

I desperately wanted my book club to read the book and then read the list of books throughout the year.

This was a great story about intergenerational relationships and how books can bring people together. Everyone (except that one book club member) really enjoyed it.

My Longest Audiobook

East of Eden

This would be East of Eden by John Steinbeck. I had been the choice of one of my book club members before the entire membership rebelled and said no to this 612 tome. It was 25 hours as an audiobook. I could never have read the hard copy. I am glad I completed it but it was tough.

Book Every Canadian Should Read

Five Little Indians Michelle Good Goodreads

I am going to defer to Lisa Goodmurphy’s review on Goodreads of Five Little Indians because she did a fantastic job! This should convince you to read this CBC Canada Reads finalist.

4.5 stars – Five Little Indians is a powerful story that portrays the trauma inflicted on First Nations children who were stolen at a young age from their families and placed in residential schools.

Michelle Good’s award-winning debut novel tells the interconnecting stories of five survivors of a residential school in British Columbia who end up in Downtown Eastside Vancouver after their release from The Mission.

The novel touches on the physical and sexual abuse that the children endured at the hands of the priests and nuns at the school but the focus is the aftermath of the abuse and how it affects the lives of the five over several decades as they try to overcome the trauma and make lives for themselves in the city.

A story of unimaginable suffering but also a story of strength, resilience and healing and an important read for all Canadians as we come to terms with the legacy of residential schools and the trauma and injustice that Canada inflicted on generations of First Nations children, their families and their communities.

A book I would recommend

Finding Me Viola Davis Goodreads

Holy smokes. I had to re-listen to the last 30 minutes at least 3 times. Why? Because it was powerful, full of life’s lessons and emotions. Many, many emotions.

It hit so many chords l did not even know existed in me. This mémoire is compelling, at times hard to listen too, but enlightening.

I learn so much about African American culture, stigmas, and realities l would not have known are possible. At times it felt like a Ken Burns documentary on the struggles of poverty and domestic abuse and violence but written with a nod to Toni Morrison.

It is worth the read but if you can, listen to it. Viola Davis’s voice is visceral, raw, tender and empowering. Yes, empowering!

This may be my favourite book of 2022.

Increase your emotional intelligence

Atlas of the Heart Brene Brown Goodreads

Because you need to know the difference between jealousy and envy. They are two distinctly different emotions. This is an entire book filled with emotions: what they mean, how they affect you, and how you can deal with them.

Just listen to it and then let it sink in. You will read it again and again, trust me. It’s a gem and beautifully illustrated.

Because these people led EXTRAordinary lives

1000 years of joys and sorrows Weiwei Ai

Truly an amazing memoir. It is very descriptive and informative of both Ai Wei Wei and his poet and activist father Ai Quing.

Both of their lives have been lived through art, activism, incarceration and rebellion. It is incredible.

If you just want to know about Ai Wei Wei, read from Chapter 9 on. You may feel bogged down by his father’s life.

It is however so very interesting reading about his life of “active resistance”. I knew his art was always political. A way of protesting through art.

I highly recommend this memoir to help understand this engaged and engaging artist.

Two gifts to Young Women in your life

We should all be feminists Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Goodreads

You need to read and listen to this book – OFTEN. A few Christmases ago, my eldest daughter gifted me this book. I loved it then. I love it now.

It’s 45 minutes worth your time. Give this book to your daughters and your sons.

It is so true: we should all be feminists.

Wolf Pack Abby Wambach Goodreads

Short and sweet.

Motivational.

Kickass

If you love Food

Taste My Life Through Food

An excellent audiobook because Stanley Tucci reads it himself. It is a delightful book that talks about his early obsession with food as well as a memoir of his life.

You can almost taste the dishes he discusses with each mouth-watering ingredient and delicate method of cooking. The hard copy edition has the actual recipes. I may listen to it again.

The Books I could not finish

This is a long, long list. If it weren’t for my Libby App, I am not sure I could put together an entire list of books that I could not finish. I listened for a minimum of an hour sometimes I was a few hours it but they just did not grab my attention. But here goes:

  • Down and Out in Paradise: The Life of Anthony Bourdain
  • Madly, Deeply: The Diaries of Alan Rickman
  • The Sea of Tranquility
  • The Wedding Dress Sewing Circle
  • Cloud Cuckcoo Land
  • My Brilliant Friend
  • When We Were Birds
  • Will (Quickly abandoned after the ‘slap’)
  • The Girl in His Shadow
  • The Mad Girls of New York
  • In a New York Minute
  • The Rose Code
  • A History of my Brief Body
  • Stone Matters
  • My Sister the Serial Killer
  • Negroland
  • Once There Were Wolves

If none of the recommendations work for you, l suggest you go over to Goodreads and pursue the 2022 Award Winners. Over 5.7 million votes were cast. It is, however, very subjective, but l know l voted.

Overall l’m please with the books l read and reread in some cases. I have no regrets about the books l abandoned.
