Best Patio and Backyard Upgrades for Spring Time

I can hardly wait for spring and summer!  Although we have had a very mild winter this year, I long to look out my office window and see the beautiful foliage and flowers.  I am a big believer in having lovely flowering containers in my front yard and I love the curb appeal that we get from investing time and effort to make our home sweet home look f.a.n.t.a.s.t.i.c.  Last year we focused on our trees and shrubs to make for overall curb appeal.  Our front yard is west-facing so in the afternoon it gets plenty of sun but in the morning and for most of the day, we get plenty of light in the backyard!  This year, I think we need to spruce up things just a bit more.  We are investing in a lawn service to take care of our well-worn grass thanks to the people at TruGreen.  We want the lawn to be just as nice as our fancy neighbour’s!  We also realized that we are going to have to put a little bit more TLC to make our patio a welcoming space we’ve decided to give them a call for a free quote (you can too).  Until then, I thought I would list a  few ideas for the best patio and backyard upgrades for spring:

1. Out with the Old… in with the New:  throw out featureless plastic patio furniture and replace it with modernist pieces that have a contemporary flare! We tend to have limited ‘nice’ weather seasons in Canada, so why not take advantage of the beautiful weather by extending your living space.  Creating an oasis right in your backyard is an upgrade well worth the price of a beautiful patio set. Purchase something comfortable and good for entertaining!
2. Not all upgrades need to be pricey.  Prolong the late evening glow from the setting sun with string lights and candle chandeliers. Making the sitting area feel cozy means not having bright lights.  Keeping it low profile means we have a small string of lights that we hang throughout the year.  Just taking a peak outside when the string lights are on, provokes and an invitation to go outside and enjoy the warm weather even in the evening!
3. Your front door doesn’t have to be the only entry with some flare…  Give your backyard neighbours something to admire, repaint the back door to add an instant dash of vibrant colour.  Following the theme of making the backyard your oasis, why not add some colour to an otherwise neglected area?  Splash a little paint on the doors or trim and spruce up the entryway.
4. Rehab your pots and planters to create a new ambiance. I am a big, big believer in using paint to give an old tired object new life.  I have painted lamp stands, shelving units and even my large outdoor urns and planters.  Nothing escapes a little freshening up with paint!
5.   Plant flora that attracts butterflies and other insects.  I fill those urns with beautiful and inviting flowers to attract the beauty of nature.  I have large planters in the front of the house, why not the back?  I am moving some around to make my oasis complete this year.
6. Curb appeal is important but giving you something to look at while you are at the back of the house is just as important.  Create paths to Secret Gardens or water features, add a flower boarder to your walkway to soften the edges.
7. In the backyard, we also have patio stones, by using succulents to fill in the gaps between rocks and stones we continue to layer the space and give the walkway texture.  Use different types of vegetation for different types of sun exposure.
8. We have been in this home for almost 12 years so our deck … well, it needs a little TLC.  Instead of covering it up completely, we can lay down a rug to define the space as an outdoor ‘living room’.  The rug is all season and lets the moisture seep into the ground below the deck.  No need to worry about moisture.
9. I love peonies in the summer but I am not a fan of roses.  I have those planted in our back yard so I don’t get to see them when I’m in my office. So having a cutting garden that will allow me to bring flowers inside to decorate my home. In the spring you can also have daffodils and tulips.  Once again, having a vase full of fresh flowers creates a peaceful space.
10. Think outside the box.  Having planters,  gardens on multi-tiered terraces or at different elevations adds interest to your backyard.  Consider expanding your patio’s reach by extending the walkway beyond the traditional ‘box’ layout.
    
11.   Never forget that full sun exposure for you and your pets is not great.  Create shady spots for you and your lazy dog (like ours). That is why it’s called the ‘dog days of summer’.  Enjoy the outdoors more.
12. Lastly, for those cool summer nights, why not build your own fire pit. Make sure that you check your city’s bylaws but wouldn’t that be a great way to relax at the end of the day?  The kids will love roasting marshmallows all summer long and making s’mores.  Wouldn’t you?
