This one short visit has changed my world… actually this has not been the first time have been to a NICU unit.  When my first daughter was born in Edmonton, we spent the first few days of her life in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  I had not thought of those days (since they were over 16 years ago) for a very long time.  But yesterday, I was brought back to a time and a place that were very stressful. Oh how times have changed…
#MiracleMoms_Children's Miracle Network_Children's Foundation1_LHSC_DownshiftingPROAs I toured the Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre, I was amazed at how much things have changed and yet how many remain the same.  The advanced monitoring technology, the patient rooms with internet access & games, the central monitoring system, the security & safety features are all brand new.  The one thing that never changes is the dedication that the physicians, nurses and health care professional all have towards their number one priority: the children. To see how much pride they have for their teams, the work that they do and the beautiful new facility is extraordinary.
Together with six other bloggers, we would like to bring a greater awareness to the Children’s Miracle Network and the Children’s Health Foundation and their contributions to our regional healthcare facility. This Children’s Hospital provided support and specialized treatments for children from 0-18 years of age (and up to 21 years for Oncology patients) throughout southwestern (London, Windsor, Startford, Owen Sound and northern Ontario (Thunder Bay, Sault St. Marie) to the Manitoba boarder. That is one huge territory to cover.
Were you aware that the Children’s Hospital serves all of these needs:

Specialized equipment & programs for:

  • Children’s Emergency
  • Paediatric Critical Care Unit
  • Inpatient Unit
  • Paediatric Medical Day Unit
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health
  • Medical Genetics Clinic

Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences Centre sees 88,796(over 88,000) Child visits each year (over 26,000 patients). Each patient has differing height, weight and sizes – different equipment requirements. That is important to note because a children’s hospital is required to have the same equipment as an adult hospital but with many variations.  That means that one size does not fit all.  These changing requirements in equipment means that there is a greater need to fund children’s hospitals.  They also need completely different equipment like cribs and incubators.  Did you know that one incubator for a premature baby costs $55,000 – yes, just ONE unit.
I will be writing a series of blog posts in the next coming months to bring greater awareness and to ask for your support of #MiracleMoms campaign.
