I have attended Braz for the Cause for 5 years. They have not all been consecutive years but they have ALL BEEN memorable years. Officially the evening is called “Fling’em for Breast Cancer” Gala but everyone that I know just calls it Braz™for the Cause or Braz™ for short.
Braz™ is a unique event held in London, Ontario to raise funds for the all the non-medical costs that people have to pay when they are going through cancer treatment.
This includes but is not limited to: child care, anti-pain and nausea medication not covered by insurance, taxi fares, parking, wigs, prostheses and bras and palliative care. Basically, The Massel-Cruickshank Breast Cancer Assistance Fund and London Health Sciences Foundation go out of their way to provide women (and men) anything that improves the quality of life while battling breast cancer… It is important to note that you shouldn’t be don’t be afraid to ask for help because they will give consideration to any request.

I got involved with Braz™ when I was asked to donate a prize for the silent auction. For a few years, I donated 4 hours of on-site professional organizing to the event. I was so curious about the event that I convinced my to go with me. I went with my sister as a way of celebrating her conquering leukemia for the first time. We wanted to celebrate with other women and were taken by the whole event. It is overwhelming to feel that amount of ‘sisterly’ love. The event is open exclusively to women from the DJ to the MC. It is a way to focus just on US girls. Below is a picture of us in 2008. We entered as a pair and won the ‘Breast of Friends’ category that year for our entry – Milk Money.
This year’s entry with the Oakridge Moms Group was 21 member strong and our theme was “Say Yes to the BREAST” a riff off of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress. We were brides with veils, diamond rings, garter belts, bouquets. and of course our decorated Braz!
The last time I was able to participate was in 2010 and our theme was “Mardi Bra” (see pic above). It is a perennial favourite theme. This year, there was also a group of ladies with that same theme Mardi Bra. The great thing about Braz is everyone does something different. You can see more of the great braz in last week’s Wordless Wednesday Post.
In 2009 we went a bit off theme and decided to go with Angels & Devils. It was pretty fun to see who picked which one. Can you guess what I what chose to be?
This is one of my favourite pictures of all time. I’m here with my really good friend Sandy. To say that our choice of theme speaks volumes for both of us!
Last year, the Oakridge moms chose WonderBra and dress as WONDER WOMEN! I had to miss because I was speaking at my national POC conference in Vancouver but I did manage to attend the bra decorating evening (which can be just as much fun). I helped the girls prepare by bringing a copy of the original Wonder Woman TV series. It was absolutely hilarious watching that old show, drinking wine and decorating bras!
Last, but certainly not least, was the year that the London and Area Chapter of the Professional Organizers of Canada (my professional association) entered a group called ‘Organized’ for a Cause. Our bras had this colourful pockets that held desk supplies and they were clearly labeled and organized. It was really cute! It was original and I know we got a kick out of supporting one of our local London charities.
It was a thrill to see young women attending with their friends to support this great cause. If you are ever in London and can attend this event, make sure and do it… You will have a gas and you will be supporting a really great cause.

What a great cause and what a fun event! It’s so important to get people more involved like this with causes. It helps them to take some ownership and really get involved!
