Are you wondering what is playing at the Stratford Festival in 2022? Stratford is back and it’s better than ever. After a two-year hiatus from performances inside the theatres, we are being welcomed back with open arms and a playbill with something for everyone. As we warm up for more performances in drama, comedy, and musicals, The Stratford Festival has much to celebrate on stage with several milestones: the 70th season, the 20th anniversary of the Studio Theatre, the 10th season of The Meighen Forum, and the grand opening of the beautiful new Tom Patterson Theatre.

The 2022 Stratford Festival season will run from April 6 to October 30, 2022, across all of the Festival’s four indoor theatres and will include more than 120 events in the Meighen Forum. You have a choice of author visits (Tomson Highway, Salmon Rushdie, Bev Sellar), politicians, activists, lawmakers, and the occasional controversial lawyer.

The Meighen Forum is also an opportunity to take workshops, attend lobby talks and forums that will help you better understand the stage productions being offered in 2022. If you wonder what is playing at the Stratford Festival and how to make sense of each production, don’t miss this particular part of the Stratford Festival experience.

If it doesn’t suit your schedule, you can always take this virtual tour with Creative Director Antoni Cimolino and Architect Siamak Hariri. Plan to sit on the terrace and watch the river meader by and maybe, just maybe you will see some of the famous Stratford swans paddle by.

What is playing at the Stratford Festival in Canada?

All the plays and performances by the actors, singers, and dancers can be divided into four categories: Shakespeare, musical, family, and modern. There are plays that will have their world premieres and those classics that are returning.

Richard III was the first Shakespeare play starring Sir Alec Guinness in 1953. To commemorate, a replica of the original coronation robe will be on display at the Tom Patterson Theatre.

The play of a Danish prince, a ghost, and revenge. They say Hamlet is performed somewhere in the world every minute of every day. The Stratford Festival’s version will have the first black female lead as Hamlet. Set in modern-day with modern clothes, I look forward to this interpretation from director Peter Pasyk

King George VI is coming to visit and an English teacher in a fictional residential school decides to put on All’s Well that Ends Well. The students decide to place their Indigenous spin on it. A suspect, this will be a very powerful performance. Well worth taking in Bev Sellar’s talk on Sept. 24th to understand where the inspiration for 1939 came from.
