On Saturday night, I was honoured to be asked to be a guest panelist for the Sarnia Justice Film Festival’s screening of “Shop ‘Tis You Drop:The Crisis of Consumerism”.
As a professional organizer, I often deal with clients that have many issues with buying and keeping TOO MUCH STUFF. As in previous blog posts, you will know that I see people consuming goods at an alarming rate (see Bananas in Pajamas or When is 24 pairs of pants enough) and having problems with limits.
Within the discussion on Saturday, I kept preaching my mantra: Organizing is about limits. If we limit the amount of stuff that we own, we can get a better grasp of what we truly need.
It is not my intention to place people out of work (as was suggested by an attendee) but by creating a change in our shopping habits, we can then give serious consideration as to what comes into our lives.

I addressed the fact that every organizer is in effect working towards change management. It is imperative that we change our habits. In a world that bombards us with 25,000 advertising impressions a year (according to the film), it is a wonder that we don’t consume more.
If you are in the Sarnia area, I encourage you to attend the screening of future films. Visit the Justice Film Festival’s website for information on upcoming events. Here is a brief listing of the movie titles and screening dates. Be sure to mark them in your calendar!
